facebook.com/TSOphotography for more photos, videos and updates.

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING VIDEO DOES NOT REPRESENT THE ENTIRE NIGHT SKY, or at least it doesn't anymore. I've updated the video to omit the foreground landscape in an effort to account for an error in perspective. Unfortunately, due to my error, websites are widely reporting that Jupiter would fill the entire night sky, but it wouldn't. What's depicted here is a much narrower perspective than the previously mentioned 62 degrees, something that I imagine could be calculated by people much brighter than I. I imagine this view is closer to what you'd see through some very weak binoculars, but that's just a guess. For a somewhat technical explanation of what was wrong with the original version of this video, and what that realization can teach us about skepticism, please read the following: bradblogspeed.com/im-bad-at-math

ORIGINAL POST

Here's an animation I did to make you feel small, and also convey the deep awe I feel at the feet of the Universe.

While watching the video of the lunar eclipse I posted the other day I was looking at the curvature of the earth's shadow on the moon. It made me think about how large the earth might look if an exact copy of it was up there instead of the moon. Soon curiosity got the better of me, and I was animating!

So the basic idea is, each planet you see is the size it would appear in the sky if it shared an orbit with the moon, 380,000 kms from earth. I created this video in After Effects, and because of certain technical considerations had to keep the field of view at 62 degrees. That means the foreground element is not precisely to scale. I realized this after the fact and may update the video at some point in the future. All planets are to correct scale with one another in any case.

Please watch full screen in HD if possible. Oh! And please consider sharing with your friends on Twitter or Facebook.

Sure, there’s twitter and all the other places I’m throwing things and pressing “Like” buttons, but people want words or photos or something more personal or whatever. There hasn’t been very much of that.

When I started this blog, I was still at university and had no children. On Sunday I was back on campus with my step-daughter and it reminded me how much has changed and how far I’ve come. Pretentious? Sure; but still true.

However what I took from the day wasn’t how far I’ve come so much as how much I’ve lost along the way. I no longer make games. I no longer draw. I no longer write. I no longer create.

None of this is anyone’s fault but my own, of course, and it hasn’t gone completely unnoticed. Throughout my life I have always created. The form of the creation has changed, but it has always been there: painting, drawing, 3D rendering, computer games, websites, software, photography.

In recent years, however, work seems to have displaced this creativity without really replacing it. Some might see my job as creative, but it isn’t the same thing. True creativity comes from within, and I’m sure it’s still in there somewhere.

It’s time to send a search party.

Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010

So I saw all of these pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do something that is not news footage but something more cinematic. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get.

Wish I had more time. I missed all the cool Lightning and the Lava of the first eruption. But I figure this will just be a trial run for another day.

I am of course accepting sponsors to send me back there for more please...!! haha

Today marks not only nine months of Oliver breathing air, but also four years since Carolyn and I first met face to face. Time passes us all by, and sometimes we forget to just stop and note all the moments and joy that life brings us.

Life has been so very good to me over these last few years. Living in a world with Carolyn is amazing. I never quite know what’s going to happen next (she is perhaps a little crazy), but I never feel like we’re out of control. We have a great little family in our home. We have all that we could require. Life is about as perfect as it could be.

Today marks the passing of a short time in what I hope to be a long and happy life with Carolyn and our awesome little family. Carolyn, I’m so glad that fate brought us together; I love you more than words can express.

Nov.9th 2007 - Nov.13th 2008 // one year on foot // 4646km through China // unlimited beard & hair growth // Homepage: thelongestway.com // Facebook: facebook.com/CRehage // musical score by The Kingpins (myspace.com/theoneandonlykingpins) and Zhu Fengbo

Additional info:
- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now.
- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
- The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" and 2) The Kingpins - "L'aventurier" - visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think.
- This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.
- The core of this project is in fact my website "thelongestway.com" where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

At 7:29 yesterday morning, our absolutely adorable baby boy was born! After a long labour, the doctors decided it was too risky to continue and he was born by caesarian section. Carolyn and baby are both doing well, though we’re asking that no one visits for now while Carolyn recovers.

He weighed 3.775kg, and is a lovely 51.5cm long. He has the most adorable eyes, and tiny but long fingers and toes. Elysha and Romilly are very proud big sisters.

I know this is a day late, but after two days with basically no sleep and a total of two meals, I needed to crash. I have been informed that it may be the last good sleep I get for a long time, but I don’t care. I have a beautiful baby boy, and Carolyn is doing OK. All is well with the world.

And now we’re overdue. I’ve had several chats with The Penguin about how it’s time to come out now, but so far this hasn’t resulted in much. I’ll add stubborn to the list of displayed traits.

Of course, with the colder weather coming, it may just want to stay in there and keep warm.

We’re completely prepared for the big day; we just don’t know when it will be. Until then, we’ll just end each day with the thought of being one day closer to whenever The Penguin is going to arrive.

The “official” due date is May 6th, but other estimates have been May 2nd, 5th, and 8th. Perhaps the doctors have a sweepstakes going?

If nothing else, it means that Elysha will get to keep April as her month. Carolyn has indicated that Romilly’s claim on September is quite safe.

Hey, you. Yeah, you. The one reading over there. You’re still here? Let me dust off a chair so you can sit down.

Have you noticed that I haven’t been around much recently? Of course you have; you’re smart. Well I can’t really apologise and tell you how busy I’ve been, because I haven’t been all that busy. I took a nice holiday over Christmas, but didn’t go anywhere. I painted Romilly’s new bedroom (pink!), finishing at 4am on Christmas Eve. I then spent the next week recovering and promising myself never to leave anything to the last minute ever again. Other than that, I have found myself enjoying family time, playing computer games, and slowly organising things for the arrival of The Penguin. For example, this afternoon was spent convincing Carolyn that a $4000 pram is not a viable option, even if you can get it on special for $200 less.

I’m actually only writing all of this as Carolyn insisted that I thank my ex-wife for pointing out that the PenguinCount® on the website here was stuck at 101 days. Carolyn really didn’t like the idea of being perpetually pregnant. The idea of a baby making its way out through your nether regions is apparently bad enough, let alone giving it additional time to grow.

Carolyn has, in fact, decided that The Penguin is going to emerge no larger than a peanut. Not liking the idea of a peanut-sized baby, it was decided that said peanut would immediately turn into a proper baby after making its easy exit. Now I can only imagine the birthing process as passing a small Poké Ball, with the midwife then screaming something along the lines of “Penguimon, I choose you!”

It is this incredibly realistic view of birth that is probably going to backfire on us at some point in the future, most probably during “news time” at school.
